Book Review: Top Girl – Danielle Marin

A big thank you to Tandem Collective and Mardle Books for this copy of Top Girl!

The blurb from the back of the book:

Danielle has a safe, happy childhood growing up in West London, but her bright future fades as she turns her back on school for gang life and crime.

Betrayed by the police after a brutal gang rape, she finds protection under the wing of organised criminals and falls in love with the local ‘top boy’. However, her allegiances bring terror to her doorstep when gun-toting rivals target her flat – and the authorities answer by taking away her baby. Heartbroken, Danielle spirals deeper into gang life and becomes a key player in a sprawling county lines operation, running drugs to satellite towns all over the UK from the gang’s London HQ.

The Harrods shopping sprees, designer handbags and hedonistic lifestyle are the envy of her friends, but the good times and cash mask the grim realities of her life.

A turning point comes when Danielle is arrested and – with the help of a probation officer – she begins to question whether she really is ‘top girl’ after all. But after five years deep in the high-earning street hustle, can she really leave it all behind?

Well, this was certainly a rollercoaster of emotions. The story was gritty and harrowing. I had to remind myself at times that I wasn’t reading fiction. This was real.

It was difficult to read what Danielle went through. I had a lot of opinions as I read this one, and a few I’m sure others wouldn’t agree with.

It was hard not to judge Danielle, especially when it came to Lloyd, because that’s when my emotions turned a little bit to anger.

The final chapter though, made me cry. Danielle does care, even though she doesn’t show it. She has turned her life around, and that’s what counts. It would have been so easy for her to carry on with the life she had: dealing drugs, and living the expensive lifestyle she craved.

But she stopped.

And now, perhaps, she has that chance with her son. She is helping others now who have found themselves in the same situation.

Well done, Danielle. 👏

I gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My name is Lisa and the pooch in my profile picture is my baby, Skye. I love everything bookish! I also find things like tarot and angel cards, along with runes and gemstones really interesting and I like to incorporate these into my photos.
