First Lines Friday is a weekly feature that I now love to take part in. It is hosted by Wandering Words.

What if, instead of judging a book by its cover or by its author, we judged the book by its opening lines?

Here is how it works:

  • Pick a book off your shelf and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines without giving the book away
  • Reveal the book.

Here we go!

The air in Belzebuthe was so thick with magic that she felt as if she had to force her limbs through the atmosphere, especially when she had been gone a while. It always took a few days to adjust and the feeling never failed to surprise her, to say nothing of the ever-present chill in the air. The cloud cover was as thick as ever, further disguising and protecting the Town, but it seemed to be colder than usual for early summer. All hairies were at rest, and the only light was from the low-hung stars particular to Belzebuthe.
