First Line Friday is a weekly feature that I now love to take part in.
It is hosted by Wandering Words.
What if, instead of judging a book by its cover or by its author, we judged the book by its opening lines?
Here is how it works:
– Pick a book off your shelf and open to the first page.
– Copy the first few lines without giving the book away.
– Reveal the book.
I would like to use these posts to reveal books on my TBR in the hope that I can find my next great read!
Here we go!
She came in here with her brand-new shoes. Happy. I don’t know her, but I’d seen her at school.
I think her name’s Rebecca. Maybe Rachel. Something with an R. She was a freshman. A year younger than me. Maybe she’s still a freshman. I don’t know how much time has passed; I don’t know how long I’ve been here.
‘Please,’ she begs, but he doesn’t stop hurting her.
It never stops.
Scroll down to reveal the book!
I Stop Somewhere by T.E. Carter
Well. I got this book from YALC this year, and I can’t believe I haven’t got to it yet.
These first lines really do make me want to read it.
Has anybody else read this book yet? What did you think? 🙂
Literary agents and publishers judge a good novel by its opening lines. They believe that the opening lines are crucial in hooking a reader. They didn’t seem impressed with the opening lines of my debut novel, self-published in August 2019, that sets up the protagonist’s obsession to have a son.
“Richard Cheong cradled his first-born in his arms. He had hoped for a boy-child but would have to wait until next time.”

Thanks. In the end, it all comes down to personal taste or interest, doesn’t it?

Definitely. I’m having the same trouble myself. But, we’ll get there one day.
