Book vs Movie – Five Feet Apart

I’ve seen a lot of these movie vs book posts so I thought it’d be fun to join in.

The Beginning

The book opens on Stella looking at a drawing of flowery lungs which was drawn by her older sister, Abby.

The movie opens with Stella’s YouTube video that is also shown at the end of the book and film.

In the book, Stella and Will have alternating chapters from their own perspectives where they say what they are feeling.

In the movie, we don’t see this. We do see Will and Stella alone in the movie, but we have to rely on their facial expressions and actions to understand how they are feeling.

In the book, Poe is a huge part of the storyline and we are given a lot of background information on him, especially how he and Stella met and became friends.

In the movie, we don’t see a lot of Poe. He is more of a minor character, although the actor does make his role memorable.

Stella’s sister, Abby

In the book, Abby is mentioned pretty much at the start and we know straight away that she is Stella’s sister.

In the movie, Abby isn’t mentioned until about halfway through and Will does some detective work to figure out who she is.

The Ending

Both versions end with a YouTube video of Stella. In the movie, it is the same clip as at the start.

In the book, Will is watching the clip at the airport where he bumps into Stella. She sees him and they end up standing five feet apart.

(I like to think that something happened, and they ended up together after all.)

So, that is quite a lot of differences. There are also a lot of similarities between the two versions:

  • Stella and Will’s dates are pretty much spot on
  • The scene of Will’s birthday dinner
  • Will’s cartoonist drawings
  • Stella’s vlogs
  • Barb.

I hope I covered everything!

Have you read the book and watched the movie? I’d love to hear your thoughts! 🙂

My name is Lisa and the pooch in my profile picture is my baby, Skye. I love everything bookish! I also find things like tarot and angel cards, along with runes and gemstones really interesting and I like to incorporate these into my photos.
